A foreign national living in Ireland who believed that it was somehow ‘okay under Irish law’ to sexually assault his step-daughter for years and years has been sentenced to just 12 years in jail.

The pedophile, whose identity hasn’t been disclosed publicly, is a 42-year-old non-native English speaker. Last month, the man was found guilty of an astounding 17 sex crimes against his step-daughter. Earlier this week on Monday, the Irish judge sentenced him to a measly 12 years in prison for committing the heinous crimes against the child during the time she was between 11 and 15-years-old.

Apparently, the crimes occurred in the family’s home while the girl’s mother was out working.

According to a report carried out by the Irish Independent at the time of the pedophile’s conviction, the reprehensible assaults began with oral rape in 2011 and later escalated to rape ‘on a highly regular basis,’ a local police officer told the case’s prosecuting attorney Vincent Heneghan SC.

The sexual abuse continued all the way up until 2017 when the girl finally gathered the courage to tell her family members what had been happening to her. A complaint with the local police was subsequently filed.

Upon being arrested and charged, the pedophile abuser initially claimed that he had believed that it was ‘okay under Irish law’ to rape the child. The man later conceded to Irish authorities that it’s not. In January of last year, the 42-year-old migrant man pleaded guilty to three separate counts of defilement of a child under the age of 17 between March and June 2017.

However, during the trial, the man denied the following counts: three counts of defiling the same girl between 2011 and 2017, one count of oral rape, 12 counts of rape, and another count of sexually exploiting the girl when he invited her to have sexual intercourse with him for 200 euros.

Despite his denial, jurors at the Central Criminal Court came back with guilty verdicts for each one of the charges. Following the guilty verdicts, the defendant’s lawyer, Damien Colgan SC, stated that his client didn’t accept the verdict and cited that the migrant had no prior convictions and had an adequate work history.

According to the Irish Times, the judge overseeing the case, Mr. Justice Michael White, stated that offenses had been a ‘serious violation of a child’ which involved an extremely serious breach of trust since the man had occupied a position of authority.

The judge also mentioned that he had taken into consideration that the pedophile rapist was an Irish citizen of foreign extraction whose next to non-existent English speaking ability would make serving time in prison more difficult.

Unsettled by the ‘intolerable’ abuse that occurred ‘as a matter of rote,’ Justice Michael White handed the defendant concurrent sentences of only 12 years.

In the court’s victim impact statement, the young rape survivor expressed that she still is suffering from low self-esteem, chronic stress, insomnia, and that her academic studies have suffered as a result of the abuse.

One can only hope and pray that this young girl won’t have to deal with these afflictions for the rest of her life.

In a statement given to the court, the girl said that when she heard the guilty verdict she broke down emotionally, saying, “I sometimes feel as if I am at the bottom of the ocean… with no light at all.”
